Jimmy knows how to do a lot of things really well, but if there's one thing that he does especially well it's spoil his ladies. Today he took Caroline on a birthday date for lunch and some shopping. She adores special time with daddy, but I'm not sure she likes it more than he does.

Today, we decided, was an awesome day for some fresh air and vitamin D. It was also an awesome day to introduce Chesty to one of the activities our family loves best - hiking! He hasn't been the best at walking on a leash on his daily neighborhood walks so we weren't sure how much "hiking" was actually going to take place with him, but maybe he can already feel the difference between a walk and a hike because he did perfectly the whole time. He seemed to love being out there in the woods as much as we loved being out there with him. His protective herding instincts were in full force as evidenced by the fact that if any of us would fall back (usually me and a little person) he would stop right in the middle of the trail and just wait for his whole pack to connect back up before he could proceed.
I felt a little vindicated when Travis couldn't help but act like a worried parent as Chesty sniffed out his boundaries ("He's getting too close to the edge! I don't want him to fall!"), and I'll admit to feeling a little teary when they said they felt proud to have him as their dog.
All in all, I'd say his first hike was definitely a success!

I'll admit, when I arrived at today's game and saw the size of the boys we were up against I assumed we'd be snockered. But our team has been described as scrappy and that scrappiness helped them give those big boys a run for their money. Yeah, the Crusaders still lost, but they put up a big fight and had a blast doing it.

Our kids are nothing if not observant, so when we wanted to surprise them all with their own portable hot drink mugs we wrapped them up and stuck them right in their stockings. It took, oh, about 30 seconds of them entering the room to notice that the stockings seemed a little weightier. Good thing they found them because tonight was the perfect night for filling our cups with hot cider and taking a Christmas lights car ride. And, of course, Chesty came too (but he doesn't have a mug).

We have a tradition in our family that when a child reaches the big milestone of becoming a full-fledged reader (as evidenced by choosing to read - and finish! - chapter books for fun), they get to have their very own big-kid bible. Today we got to surprise Caroline with hers. We're so proud of her new found love for reading and are glad to give her the most wonderful story ever written to have for her very own. I think she kind of liked it, too.
I hope she always loves this book joy...
