Four months have already gone by since this precious little person joined our family. Since I really can't even describe his sweetness in words,  his smile in this picture will have to do the talking for me!

I'm a rare mom who actually kinda likes a good sick day every once in a while. Our sick day today was made even better when a timely box arrived on our doorstep this morning from MawMaw and PawPaw. The coloring pages and color-by-numbers were just what the doctor ordered!

Meet Jaretta. Mr. White calls her a sweetheart and says she's a real good milker. Jaretta, along with lots of her friends, just had calves so now Mr. White's precious raw milk is available in abundance. That's a good thing because we're pretty big fans of it.

To celebrate the start of a new school year, we chose to put our Kyker Kids Fun Jar (money that they've been saving up to use for some fun family time) to use and we headed to Frankies Fun Park! Frankies has just about every activity that kids think is awesome, including Laser Tag (which I happen to think is awesome and now after experiencing it my kids do, too).

Kids love go-carts and they love them even more if they can drive themselves. Frankies has a track specifically for 4-10 year olds so yes, even Ben got to drive a car by himself! I was a little uncertain about this and my concerns were proven to be wise when his first two starts had him crashing into other objects at full speed, but just as I was ready to wave the flag for him to come out he got the hang of it and was off! He actually steered himself around the course really well and totally loved it. The big kids did have to do a little fancy weaving as they came around him and there was that one time when he got himself turned around and finished the course in the wrong direction, but otherwise he was perfect. : )

But my favorite part? The Laser Tag battle.  A little background... One day, a long, long time ago, I brought several of my college friends (including Jimmy) to visit my dear friend Rachel in Nashville. It was on this trip that I got my first taste of Laser Tag victory. I was curious to see whether or not I still had it and was delighted to find that,  yes, I still do. I don't feel the tiniest bit bad about stomping my own kids and I'm actually quite thrilled that I stomped my husband. If you ask him about it he'll tell you that I used less-than-noble tactics, but go easy on him. It's been a while since he last got to wear his "expert" weapons qualification badges and being beaten by his wife might have rubbed a little salt into that wound.

I have to admit, I've come into this new school year feeling less ready and able than ever before. It's a year of a lot of firsts and firsts can be a little intimidating. For starters, it's my first year to have six students. Six! And yes, Eli fully counts as a student. : ) Secondly, as those students get older their work becomes a little more demanding. Combine that with the start of co-op classes for the big kids and a few little preschoolers that I don't want to unintentionally leave behind and you have a teacher being pulled in lots of different directions and all at the same time. I felt anxious to come up with the perfect schedule that would flow seamlessly from the very start, one that allowed for uninterrupted time with each child while the others all continued on peacefully and joyfully with their own work. I wanted to be certain that the little boys would be content to go and play sweetly (and quietly! and without fighting!) after their preschool time and that Eli would take consistently long morning naps so that the big kids could work efficiently. I had hoped to have worked out a good cleaning routine so that each of the major jobs were accomplished on their given day throughout the week. I was planning on returning to my weekly menu planning so that dinners were already thought of and prepared for each night and all of the necessary ingredients were in the kitchen ready and waiting.....

I'm glad the my six students were far too ready and willing to begin our new school year to wait for me to attempt to pull everything together and hold on to it all as if my life depended upon it. Yes, I am more disorganized at the start of this year than I ever have been before. Our summer has been wild and busy and I'm coming into this school year a little more weary than refreshed. I've worried that not having these details nailed down before hand was going to wreak havoc on our school day and that we weren't going to be able to accomplish all that I know we need to accomplish.

Today we jumped in with both feet and the Lord has been good to remind me that my job is not to be the perfect teacher who fills my students heads with all of the perfect facts, but rather their loving mother who loves them, disciplines them and teaches them about Jesus. And as impossible as that job feels sometimes it sure feels a whole lot easier and more freeing than my attempts at perfection!

I am excited about this year. I am really looking forward to the topics we will discover and learn together, I'm excited about the conversations we will have now that our kids are old enough to begin to process the information that they are learning rather than just take it in as fact, and I'm relieved to have been given a fresh perspective on my role as teacher to these students.

I may be a little biased, but I think I have the best roster of any classroom around.

Redeemer softball begins again! Their most devoted fans couldn't be any more excited. Sam spent every second
that he could out on the field and even imitated Jimmy's third base coaching moves. Thursday nights are fun again!

There are some beds in our house whose sheets get changed more often than others and it usually has something to do with not making it to a potty in time. So when I finally get around to washing the sheets on our bed it's a pretty big deal because our sheets are the only ones big enough to play a game we like to call "Sheet Bubble". It started as a way to keep little people occupied while I folded laundry and it's become a time-honored tradition that the big kids have now passed down to the little boys. As soon as they see that fitted sheet come out of the dryer, lots of little bodies curl up real tight on the floor next to each other and wait for the sheet to come parachuting over them to create a "bubble" all around them. If they lie really still it will stay nice and high for a long time, but inevitably someone will get a little crazy and burst the bubble. That's when the laughing turns to tears and gets the "popper" expelled. : ) It's good, clean fun.
