Today found us being all touristy as we set out to see the sights of Gatlinburg. Ober Gatlinburg is the ski resort for the area and in the summertime they turn those slopes into awesome slides. Combine those slides with an outdoor maze, some super swings and a twisty water slide (and throw in ice cream and funnel cake stands) and you have yourself a fun little amusement park that is sure to tire out vacationing kids.

On top of all of that fun (as in, literally, on top), we also took a ride on the gondola that takes you from the top of the mountain down into the town of Gatlinburg. Once I decided that I was pretty sure we weren't going to die up there, it was actually pretty awesome. And definitely breathtakingly beautiful.

Maw Maw and Paw Paw are here as we all prepare for our big family reunion this weekend in Pigeon Forge, TN. Last night when our down-the-road cousins came over and with Ashleigh still here Paw Paw realized that they had 10 of their 12 grandchildren in the room. I think Maw Maw kinda likes it that way (and was wishing the other two were also here!).

If you're tempted to think that the newness of having a baby around might have worn off on Caroline and that she might not be as devoted as she was when he first arrived, you'd be wrong. If anything, she's only honed her skills and never tires of learning new ones. For example, today I went up to get Eli out of bed only to find that he wasn't there. I found him in Caroline's room with her, happy as can be, in fresh clothes. When she saw the surprise on my face she just matter-of-factly said, "I came up and heard him fussing so I got him. Then I saw that he was wet so I changed his diaper and put dry clothes on him." Well, alrighty then. Good thing he at least needs me for nourishment.

She's going to be a great mommy joy...

Life is precious. Every moment is a gift and a blessing. The things that I let myself believe are important really aren't all that important at all when my perspective is made more clear. The God that I serve is a good God and though a lot of the time his grace comes in ways that are easy to bear, sometimes his grace is excruciatingly painful. But it's still grace. And I'm trying to remember that tonight as friends suffer unimaginable loss.

In order to celebrate this precious life that we've been given, Ashleigh and I headed out to enjoy God's creation and to mark the occasion of her upcoming senior year of high school. She's been coming to stay with us every summer since she was nine years old and it's been such a joy to watch her grow up and mature a little bit each year. One summer she was very much a little girl who needed to be begged to shower and brush her teeth, and the next she was very much a young lady who spent an hour on her hair each time we left the house. I've been telling her for a few years now that she was not allowed to get too cool for her yearly trips to KK's house and I'm thankful that she's obeyed so far. As she and I have had conversations about her college options I certainly did not suggest that she look into schools up this way so that she could come and bring friends with her over weekends. Ahem. Ok, maybe once or twice.

Anyway, the heartbreaking news that we received today has served to remind me of how incredibly blessed I am to be surrounded by such special people and how important and good it is to enjoy and celebrate those relationships. I loved celebrating Ashleigh tonight and I love the beautiful young woman that she's growing into.

I can't believe she's a senior joy...

"Our" baby wren got to test his little wings today! Jimmy and the big boys were in the garage when they heard a teeny, tiny little chirp and then a responding little cluck. Mama and baby were talking to each other while he explored his world for the first time! It's been so much fun to watch this precious mama care for her baby, but I'll say that I'm pretty glad that it takes my babies a lot longer than 9 days to leave my nest. : )

It's summer and do you know what that means??? Ashleigh's here!! We love our annual summer visits with Ashleigh and we're so glad to have her, even if she's going off and growing up and getting jobs that she has to ask time off from that makes her visit a tiny bit shorter every year. We'll take what we can get.

Enjoying her while we can joy...

While out playing a little two on one with Sam and Daddy, Travis suffered a bloody blow to the lip. It wasn't pretty and by the time he got back to me his lip was already growing. But boys are funny about their injuries and accept them as badges of honor. It wasn't fun to get his lip all busted up, but I have a feeling that he thinks it's a risk worth taking for time on the court with his dad.

It was worth it joy...
