Thursday evening three families set out on an adventure. Ron and Jimmy were set to compete in the North Georgia Adventure Race in Ellijay from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. We decided to make it a multi-family affair and headed to the Deadwyler family lake house to set up our Race Weekend Head Quarters. I had every intention of providing photographic evidence of just how much stuff went into the making of this weekend, but in the insane busy-ness of actually getting it all pulled together it completely slipped my mind. If you consider for a moment what might be needed for a family of seven, then add in four sleeping bags and a pack-n-play, and games and toys and books to keep 13 children (nine and under) entertained, and enough groceries to share between 19 people... you might be able to imagine that it would be a lot. And we haven't even begun to talk about the amount of gear that the racers needed, including a boat on the top and bikes on the back. We were a sight to behold, for certain.

The weather was amazing (if a bit cold), but we were still able to get in a little exploring.

Grandparents always see the best in their precious grandchildren, so the thought of taking eight children (nine and under) out for dinner sounded like nothing but a wonderful night out to them. Prepared for chaos but hoping for peace and looking forward to a night of no cooking (and yummy food!), we were more than happy to accept their generous offer.

Dinner was fabulous, the company was most enjoyable, no drinks were spilled and no one fell out of his or her chair! A success, to be certain.

Fun night out with family joy...

One day many years ago, when my first baby was not quite three years old, we were visiting my cousin's family at their home in North Carolina. Travis had been enjoying playing in their big back yard and was especially fascinated by the discovery of a pile of logs back in the corner. He climbed all over that small pile and had the time of his little life out there while I, his nervous mommy, sat at the window and watched him from inside. I kept suggesting to Jimmy that we go and tell Travis to find another place to play because surely it wasn't safe for him to be climbing like that, but Jimmy kept insisting that he would be fine. Growing more and more anxious by the second, I finally said, "But what if he falls?!", to which Jimmy replied, "He'll be fine and it will be good for him." I learned right then and there that I was going to have to toughen up if I was going to be a successful mother of boys.
Since then, not only has that little boy has gotten bigger and more adventurous, but we've added a few more boys (and a pretty spunky little girl) right behind him. That lesson that I "learned" that day when he was three has had to be re-learned over and over again as those boys have needed to test their wings. Today the lesson came in the form of giving them the freedom to climb the tree without shouting at them to, "Be careful!" (even if I'm praying it in my head!). Before I can even blink my eyes, the lesson will come in the form of them driving down the road without me or heading off to college.
So I guess when I think about it, we're really all testing our wings together in different ways.

My third baby joined the rank of official "big kid" today when she lost her first tooth. Her timing was perfect as Maw Maw arrived about 3 hours later with a tooth fairy pillow! Of course, Caroline knows her tooth fairy quite well and reminded "her" not to forget her duty tonight. : )
